~1 n 1 a group of words that together have a particular meaning, especially when they express the meaning well in a few words  (He said the President was - what was the phrase he used? - `trigger happy'. | Mrs Thatcher was, in Gorbachev's phrase, `the iron lady'.) 2 technical a group of words without a finite verb, especially when they are used to form part of a sentence, such as `walking along the road' and `a bar of soap'  (- compare clause (2), sentence1 (1)) 3 a short group of musical notes that is part of a longer piece  (- see also to coin a phrase (coin2 (2)), a turn of phrase (turn2 (10))) ~2 v 1 to express something in a particular way  (Criticisms were phrased in careful terms. | a politely-phrased refusal) 2 to perform music so as to produce the full effect of separate musical phrases
